Mini Blinds

Small, compact mini blinds are great for spicing up a room’s appearance, and for adding a splash of color to a room.  While you can buy mini blinds in the traditional white or cream colors, they are also available in a wide array of brilliant colors.  You can even find some blinds with a graded color appearance, where the darker shade is at either the top or the bottom of the mini blind.

While mini blinds are not quite as popular as they were twenty five years ago, they are still frequently bought and installed in homes.  The decrease in their popularity has meant that you can’t always find quite as many colors available as you may have in the past, but there is still a huge variety of blinds to choose from, and a quick search online will turn up many different types of mini blinds.

Aluminium is still the material of choice for many when buying mini blinds, although it is possible to find both wood and faux wood mini blinds. Aluminium mini blinds are perfect for kitchens and bathrooms, and the cheerful colors that are available would match any décor.

Although you can buy mini blinds with different slat sizes, preferential size and the one that seems to work the best is one inch slats, at .008 inch thickness.  Thinner slats are much more temperamental to use, and do tend to bend or brake easily.  Slats of this size are more sturdy, yet still thin enough to be lightweight and easy to use. When checking out the slats on a mini blind, it is highly recommended to ask whether or not the slats are spring tempered and scratch resistant–both ideal, if you want your mini blind to last.

Ideas for Decorating with Mini Blinds

Sometimes you just need blinds to cover windows in a room, and aside from making sure they don’t clash with the décor of your room, you aren’t really fussy what you put up.  Mini blinds are great in a situation like this. You can even just go ahead and buy cream or white colored blinds and not worry about what shade fits best with your current room décor.

Alternatively you can choose a color that fits with your room, and buy your blinds accordingly. One tip that I have found in decorating, when deciding on what color blinds to put up, is to choose one of the less used colors in the room and match your blinds to that. This really helps accent the room, and brings out colors and shades that are often more subdued.

If you want to draw attention to your windows, then choose a bold color or an unusually designed and patterned mini blind.  If you want your blinds to melt into the overall appearance of the room, then choose either a neutral color, or a light shade of the predominant color your room is decorated with.

Finally, you’re not sure what to do with your old mini-blinds?  One interesting article I read suggested you cut them up and make free plant labels from them, though it would most likely only work with old vinyl mini blinds.
